京の扇作りの歴史を体現しています
宮脇賣扇庵は、近世の町屋そのままの店舗とともに、京の歴史と風格を体現した店舗といわれ、江戸時代からほぼすべての製品を自社で製造販売してきました。三代目が工芸品としての飾り扇を考案した後も、その伝統と技法は今日に継承されております。 手触りや開き具合、重さ、使い勝手など、用と美が一体となった扇作りは高い評価を受け、扇面には多彩なオリジナルの絵が用いられ、その多くが手描きで仕上げられています。
京都扇子団扇商工協同組合の組合員が、扇面・扇骨・仕上加工まで国内生産したものだけが“京扇子”と表示出来ます。

富岡鉄斎がつけた屋号。
創業は文政6年。美濃国出身の初代が、近江屋新兵衛の株を買い受けて創業しました。現在の屋号は、書画をたしなみ、文人墨客とも深い交流があった三代目新兵衛のとき、明治20年、日本画家・富岡鉄斎により、賣扇桜という京の銘木にちなんで名付けられました。 商標の美也古扇は冷泉為紀の筆によっています。
また、三代目新兵衛は、大正6年に、初代の時代から集められた扇に関する資料や知識をまとめ「賣扇庵扇譜」という本を出版しています。その後、昭和26年に株式会社となり、現在に至ります。

Miyawaki Baisenan embodies the spirit and elegance of Kyoto’s long history of fan-making.
Housed in a traditional machiya townhouse that retains the atmosphere of the Edo period, the store has been producing and selling nearly all of its products in-house since its founding.
After the third-generation owner introduced kazari-sen, decorative fans recognized as works of art, the company’s traditions and techniques have been carefully handed down to this day. Each fan reflects the perfect balance of utility and beauty—its texture, smooth opening, weight, and comfort are all crafted with precision. The fan surfaces feature a variety of original designs, most of which are meticulously hand-painted by artisans.
Only fans whose fan surface, fan ribs, and assembly are entirely produced in Japan by members of the Kyoto Sensu and Uchiwa Cooperative Association are permitted to bear the title “Kyō-sensu” (Kyoto Fan).

A Name Bestowed by Artist Tomioka Tessai
Miyawaki Baisenan was founded in 1823 (Bunsei 6) by its first-generation owner, originally from Mino Province, who took over the business rights of a Kyoto fan merchant named Omiya Shinbei.
The current name, “Baisenan,” was given in 1887 (Meiji 20) by the renowned Japanese painter Tomioka Tessai, a close friend of the third-generation owner, also named Shinbei. The name was inspired by Baisen-zakura, a famous cherry tree of Kyoto. The trademark “Miyakosen” was written by court noble Reizei Tamenori.
In 1917 (Taisho 6), the third-generation Shinbei compiled and published “Baisenan Senpu”, a book documenting the history, knowledge, and craftsmanship of Japanese fans accumulated since the company’s founding.
In 1951 (Showa 26), Miyawaki Baisenan was incorporated as a company and continues its legacy to this day.
