The Art of Kyoto Folding Fans — The Ceiling Paintings of Miyawaki Baisenan
Founded in 1823, Miyawaki Baisenan is one of Kyoto’s oldest fan makers, carrying on nearly two centuries of craftsmanship and beauty.
On the second floor of our Kyoto main store, visitors can experience a true cultural treasure — a magnificent ceiling adorned with 48 fan paintings created in 1902 by some of Kyoto’s greatest artists, including Tomioka Tessai, Takeuchi Seihō, Tanomura Chokunyū, and Kawai Gyokudō.
These masterpieces, painted on fan-shaped canvases, depict scenes of nature, people, and auspicious motifs — each capturing the refined aesthetics of the Meiji period Kyoto art world. Together, they form a breathtaking composition across the entire coffered ceiling.
